 Project: Flower Baskets & Barrels

The Downtown Canby Flower Basket Project, founded in 2006, is a community effort to provide flowering baskets in the Downtown core throughout the summer. Due to the generous efforts of the following organizations, along with Canby High 'Floriculture' students and volunteer citizens, the project is able to come in on budget.  It expands beyond 2nd street to include Wait Park.

The plant stock that filled a total of 72 baskets and 24 planters were grown by Canby High School Agriscience/Horticulture students and planted by teams of volunteers during the first week of May.

Canby is known as the “Garden Spot” and our hometown pride is proudly displayed in the Downtown core thanks to the following people:

Canby Downtown Flower Basket Committee

Catherine Comer, Canby Business Development

JillMarie Wiles, Canby Livability

Bev Doolittle, Canby Area Chamber of Commerce

Terri Cummings, Canby High School

Kathy Jacobe

Cindi Elliott

Participating Organizations:

Canby Business Development

Canby Livability Coalition

Canby Area Chamber of Commerce

Canby High School Agriscience/Horticulture

Canby Urban Renewal District

Thank you to our 50 student volunteers

and over 40 citizen-based volunteers who made this project so successful.

Thank you to Tres Café for providing muffins, coffee and juice

for our volunteers during the planning and planting process.

The “Garden Spot” truly lived up to its name during the 2006 summer season with the amazing floral display in the beautiful baskets and planters in the Downtown Canby core and around Wait Park. The hanging & potted flowers also served as a “floral billboard” to show a healthy, thriving business core and served as a backdrop for our summer concert series and community activities. Our hometown pride really showed not only for our residents, but also to our visitors and prospective businesses.

The numerous letters of praise and support for the program that appear in the Herald throughout the year's are a boost to everyone involved with the baskets. Thank you to everyone in the community who went out of their way to give such wonderful compliments in written notes or in person.

“A special thank you to the Agatha Andrus Memorial Flower Basket Fund”

The committee would also like to acknowledge the Andrus family for contributing to the project by establishing the Flower Basket Project Fund in honor of Agatha Andrus. Contributions to the fund will help to continue the Flower Basket program and can be made through the Canby Chamber.

For Downtown businesses who would like to continue the floral color continuity at their store fronts,  you can order baskets through Bev Doolittle at the Canby Chamber 503-266-4666.

If you have an interest in volunteering for the upcoming installation of this year's baskets, please contact JillMarie Wiles or 503-263-4747.

The 2006 Flower Basket Project was embraced with enthusiasm, support and outstanding volunteerism. The committee would like to recognize that the success of this program is directly related to the pride that Canby citizens feel for their town. The baskets have become more than just beautiful flowers planted in downtown. They are a symbol of what makes Canby a community, a place where we all work, live and play.

THANK YOU CANBY!
