Canby Green Space & Art Park

The Canby Livability Coalition's vision for the Canby Green Space and Art Park which includes a 9,300 square foot lot located at the corner of NW Territorial Rd. and N. Holly Street will be preserved as a community green space that celebrates our agricultural, historical, and river based heritage as well as our cultural diversity through elements of public art.

In cooperation with CLC, a Steering Committee was formed in January 2007 that includes representatives from the CLC Advisory Board, Canby Arts Association, Canby Historical Society, Canby Area Chamber of Commerce, School District/Education, Neighborhood Associations, City of Canby,  and local citizens.  This committee met, under the supervision of Cheryl Snow, staff member of the Arts Alliance of Clackamas County for 5 months.  They will reconvene as necessary throughout the art park process.

Click here to view the Canby Art Park website.  This site contains the schematic of the park, Steering Committee final report and budget as well as other important information.

Our vision for the Canby Green Space and Art Park:

1. The Art Park will showcase livability in Canby, echoing the message of the “Welcome to Canby” gateway sign located at the 650 sq.ft. tip of the lot. The completed project will communicate who we are as a community as well as leave a legacy for future generations.

2. All creative representation within the park will be in the form of native plants, indigenous animals and historical features. A fern might be planted in the space or it could be depicted through art. Indigenous animals could be those that historically were a part of our local heritage, such as deer or bear, or currently live in the area like foxes and squirrels. Historical features may include references such as the Canby Ferry or early settlers.  Click here for the conceptual drawing of the park.

3. All plant material will be native, low maintenance and drought resistant whenever possible. (Note: Terri Cummings, instructor in the Canby High School Agri-science Department, has committed to creating a curriculum for the students to study and grow appropriate plants for the park, as well as transplant them to the park.)

4. Artists submitting art for the park will be encouraged to create interactive and educational projects whenever possible. Interactive features may include the use of wind, sound, light and other natural elements. Through signage, young visitors will be encouraged to explore and discover hidden art works. The park will not contain any play structures such as slides, climbing structures or swings.

5. Three pathways will connect the park to the existing neighborhood and to sidewalks located on Holly and on Territorial. Pavers for the paths will be sold to underwrite the project. An inlaid compass will serve as a navigation tool for locating art pieces and engraved pavers and will serve as an aerial landmark. (Note: Canby Sand & Gravel & Oregon Stone Crafters have committed to providing their products and services at a substantial discount and to engrave the pavers in place as they are sold.) Interested in sponsoring a pathway or brick, contact us.

6. In accordance with Canby Livability goals, all service & material providers will be locally based whenever possible.

7. Artists associated with the project may live outside the local Canby Area.

8. As indicated on the Earthworks conceptual drawing, there will be 3 sections within the park. Each section will contain a bench and 3 additional artworks. The benches may all be of the same design or each different, but will be artistic in nature and function well as benches.

9. At the request of the original neighborhood survey, the main anchor piece located behind the “Welcome to Canby” sign will provide an artistic structural barrier to protect the interior of the park from the traffic at the 4 way stop. (Note: 3-5 stone pillars with engraved art, provided through Canby Sand & Gravel, have been proposed. Though drilling the pillars to create a water feature could be a possibility, at this time it is not proposed.)

10. At the request of the original neighborhood survey, any structures or foliage located along the edges of Holly Street or Territorial Road will not be over 4 feet high. This will allow visitors to see into the area as well as discourage negative activities.
